3 The Guitar in the Baroque

bar2.jpgThis instrument had 5 courses of strings and the style of music played used elaborate strumming techniques. The guitar often had a high string in place of a normal bass string to facilitate reverse strumming. It was often used in the European courts and its most famous exponent was Robert de Visee, who played at the court of Louis XIV, the Sun King.
